Through discussions I've had with friends, it becomes apparent that some believe Islam to be a far more virulent religion than the other major religions. The argument could continue that this nature of Islam means that it is more incompatible with general progress on human rights and democratic values than other religions. I disagree.

Value of debate
Welcome to anyone viewing this. While trying to think of a good first topic to put on the blog, it occurred to me that the first topic that should be discussed is whether this is a valuable exercise.
I believe that true debate leads closer to truth. One of my many laments for the current state of this country is that it appears that true debate has been usurped by choreographed soundbites, blustering talking-heads, and generally a complete lack of legitimate discussion of crucial issues in mainstream America. While I don't think that this blog can save America, I do personally enjoy trying to test my beliefs and watching the evolution that comes with friends pointing out flaws in my reasoning or challenging assumptions I have made.
So the first question should probably be, does anyone disagree with the value of debate?
